Animals Year 7 Assessment

A lot of English words come from the old LATIN language.

All animals have a LATIN name (a zoological or scientific name) as well as a common name. One well-known example is:

Tyrannosaurus Rex - which is LATIN for� King of the tyrant lizards.

When you visit the zoo you will find the name of the animal on each cage and information about what the animal is, where it comes from, what its eating habits are etc�

LOOK at the LATIN word for the following animals:

CHOOSE two of these animals.

YOUR TASK is to make up a long LATIN name for each animal using words from the boxes below.
Each animal must have:

  • A proper scientific name

  • A common name that is easy to remember

    Here is an example:

    Scientific name: Feles Albus Cauda Longus

    Common name: Long - tailed white cat
